In 1985, the Tmt. Kannammal Educational Trust was established with the aim of registering some modification and progress in the education scenario. This Trust commenced the Thai Moogambigai Polytechnic College. In 1988, the Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College began operations. In 1991, the Thai Moogambigai Dental College was founded. In 2003, both these colleges attained the Deemed University status and were named Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute. Orders regarding the preceding were issued by the following:
- The University Grants Commission, New Delhi
- The Union Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India, New Delhi
