University of Mumbai

In 1857, the ‘University of Bombay’ was established as per the ‘Wood’s Education Dispatch.’ This university is one of the first three universities in the country. When the name of the city was changed from ‘Bombay’ to ‘Mumbai’, the name of this university was changed to ‘University of Mumbai.’ The Government of Maharashtra issued a notification about this modification and published this notification in the Government Gazette on 4^th September 1996.  In 2001, a 5-star status was allocated to this university. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in April 2012 assigned an ‘A’ grade  status to this university. Further, University Grants Commission (UGC) gave the University with Potential for Excellence (UPE) status to the University of Mumbai. Then, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) included the university in the Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence (PURSE) scheme.

On 24^th March 1971, this university began its correspondence education program. This was referred to as the Directorate of Correspondence programs. In 1985, its first upgrade took place as the ‘Directorate of Distance Education.’ In 1993, the next upgrade took place as the ‘Institute of Distance Education.’ Then in 2008-09, this institute was renamed as the ‘Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL).’ the goal of this institute is to implement degree programs and professional and technical programs through the distance mode. In this way, it assigns highest priority to human resource development.
