Distance education in MBA is a post-graduate course for students who have completed their graduation. This management program is suitable for the following types of students and working professionals:

  • Those who have a busy schedule
  • Those who have financial constraints
  • Those who cannot secure a valid score in entrance examinations (such as XAT, MAT and CAT)
  • Those who cannot take admission to a full-time MBA program

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has accredited this distance education course in MBA. As per UGC Regulations 2018, higher educational institutions can provide distance learning and online learning degree, diploma and certificate programs with standards that are similar to the on-campus, traditional classrooms.

Selection criteria for MBA distance education

Distance education colleges and universities have the following selection criteria for applicants:

  • Graduates in any discipline with a minimum of 50 percentage marks for Open candidates and a minimum of 45 percentage for Reserved candidates

A majority of distance colleges and universities do not conduct any entrance examinations or consider the score of national-level entrance MBA examinations for purpose of admission. However, there might be a few distance colleges and universities that consider the MBA entrance examinations.

Distance MBA aspirants should have academic skills and also soft skills. While doing the course, students learn business management and organisational skills. To successfully complete the course, students should have the following skills:

  • Presentation skills
  • Decision-making abilities
  • Problem-solving abilities
  • Analytical skills
  • Leadership skills
  • Management skills
  • Good communication skills

Process to apply for MBA distance education

Distance MBA applicants should read all the eligibility guidelines before they fill up the application form. If the applicants do not fit in the eligibility criteria, they can lose their candidature. In the process of application, applicants should remember the following points:

  • The application must be submitted prior to the last date of application. Applications submitted after this date are rejected.
  • Applicants must transfer the amount that is equivalent to the application fee.
  • The distance college provides admissions to shortlisted candidates or invites them for an interview.

The duration of MBA distance education

Distance MBA colleges and universities have multiple admission cycles during the entire year. Thus, the admission process continues throughout the year. MBA aspirants can opt for a suitable institute and course that is as per individual requirements.


When students opt for a distance MBA, there is a lot of saving of time and money. Moreover, after completion of the course, post-graduates can get better job placements or promotions at work.
